Farewell COSL

October 27th, 2008 by Justin Ball

For sometime now I have known that my time at COSL was running out. I wasn't sure exactly when it would expire, but last Friday basically became my last day. I know that there have been various issues surrounding the center, but think what you may it would be hard to find a gathering of more intelligent and talented people. Game night has been an extension of our daily work and will continue to be a gathering of the best minds. It has provided myself and each of my colleagues an outlet and a proof that COSL was more than just a place to work. I think most organizations struggle to develop within the kind of comradeship that grew organically from mutual respect and friendship.

It has been a long time since I was part of such a gifted group of individuals. Thank you to all my friends and I look forward to our continued efforts towards world domination, or at least the part of that undertaking that involves being able to pay the bills.

I played a lot of sports growing up, even played on some highly competitive and successful teams. It always irks me a bit when people talk about ‘teams’ at work because it is so seldom the case that you find the same kind of comradeship and ability to work together that you get on good sports teams. But in my brief experiences with the crew at COSL, you truly had a great ‘team’ there. If there had been a World Series of OER, you would have won it. And know that some of your work there (OER Recommender, 51 weeks, educommons) continues to inspire many of us in the field. And also know that once you’ve had that satisfying experience, its hard to go back, so good luck finding your next team. I have no doubt you will.

    Justin,

You still have TWB, though. I can understand the sadness (was a nice group there at COSL)… As a keynoter at the COSL conference (2007) and meeting the COSL team, I was so impressed that I had to blurt out that Barney moment on stage. It has led to the TWB website and to much more, and for COSL, I am forever grateful….
