I just got a notification about the status of Trek's Project One. Even if there are a few kinks left to work out and even though the pricing isn't on the site just yet I am thrilled that Trek decided to let us have a look at what they are planning. Praise to Trek for listening to their customers.

Thanks for the info Michelle Dennhardt
With Project One you have a number of paint options. It will cost you a bit more money but you can build the bike you want. You can also select a number of different component groups, wheels, etc. As far as look, go to the website and play with their customization application. That will give you an idea. Weight will depend on how you build up the bike. If you get super light carbon wheels and outfit it with SRAM Red it will be light for sure (and expensive). Ride is a hard thing to measure. I have ridden a number of very expensive bikes lately while trying to determine which one to buy. To me the new Madone is similar in ride quality to the Time VXR Pro Team. It is not as harsh as an Orbea Orca, but not as plush as the Calfee Dragonfly that I rode. I think Trek has built a great bike. One other bike I just ride that I found interesting was the Specialized Tarmac SL2. It is a very light bike and very expensive - $8500. I found the ride quality similar to the Madone but a bit more twitchy. I didn’t spend a lot of time on it so it is hard to give it a good review. However, it is light, fast and responsive. If I were a hardcore racer I would look at that bike, but I am more interested in hills, distance, group rides and overall comfort. The Madone I think is a better fit in those areas. I also think that the Madone looks cooler and you can customize it via Project One. Good luck on your search for a bike. If you are ever in the Logan Utah area post a comment to my blog and come ride with us. If you are interested in buying a bike I can hook you up with the local shop. I think they would make you a great deal.
I have a Project One Pilot, less than two years old, with the paint chipped and Trek says tough! I tried to buy a small bottle of the paint to touch it up, but they do not have any of the Orange color. I have suggested that at least they could provide a small bottle of touchup paint with each bike to help out. No answer yet.
