I think you can do a save all or something and it will write all the tags into the photos. We just rebuilt my wife's computer and managed to get everything back. Try selecting the top folder in the left nav and then select save. That might work. If not I'll have to do some research on how picasa stores tags. Do be sure to change the location where it stores it's items from 'My Pictures' to something that you can backup. I put that folder next to my pictures folder and then backup all that data to an external drive.

Google search, there are a couple of free exif rename utils.

Regarding backups, Picasa will save the tags in it's own DB. Just using your method or a copy/paste of the directories of pictures just won't do it.

I've started to do something like this, but actually what you mention does help a lot, specially how to organize on import.

thank you...

I was looking for a photo management app (like photoshop elements) but this guide actually gave me a few other ideas. I'm going to try out Picasa now.

Nice write up. Thanks for the effort.

Here's a way to use S3 to backup your photos. I'll bet it is almost as cheap as CDs and it more reliable.

I was using CDs for backup, but it got to a point where I had to many and I gave up. Also, if you do use CDs you need to check on them periodically to make sure they haven't gone bad. I have had this happen a few times.

I am now looking into backups to Amazon S3. At .15 per gig per month it is hard to beat it for a backup solution.

What do you think of using cd's as a back up? I am going to do everything else you suggested later tonight. I even have an external hard drive I already use to store pics, but my backups to mom and dad go on disks.

I use MirrorFolder to keep my photos (and other stuff) synced to an external USB backup drive. It works fine and doesn't get in the way. It uses a filter driver and runs completely in the background. Here's the link: http://www.techsoftpl.com/backup/index.php. It cost about $40 bucks. If I had a Mac I would just use the built-in Time Machine.

[...] So ya, I want to come to your house and work on your computer really bad. Even if you paid me the $150 an hour I have charged as a consultant (for jobs I really don’t want to do) I still have no interest in working on your computer. None. It isn’t interesting. It is painful and I know that not only do you not want to pay me but you are going to make me try to figure out a way for you to store all your digital photos from your brand new camera with a 4GB flash card on a 10 year old 500 MB hard drive because you are to to cheap and stupid to get the hardware you need to get the job done right. (You will also call me in tears when that 10 year old hard drive crashes and you lose all your precious memories of fluffy and the kids at the beach). I have a different rant on the managing digital photos/I don’t want to hear you bawl if you lo... [...]
